Some of the biggest names in contemporary art are coming to the Denver Art Museum as part of an unprecedented year-long lecture series., funded by internationally known collectors Vicki and Kent Logan of Vail.
The lineup, titled "Logan Lectures 2007," will feature 10 major artists from around the world whose works are on view in the museum's new $110 million Hamilton Building. Ludwig dances in his familiar blue jacket, naked from the waist down. Alberich hacks off his penis with a giant sword. The first act of ''Die Walküre'' is a trio for three naked men, one of whom becomes visibly pregnant (the wonders of a prosthesis and flesh-colored makeup). This last, it might be argued, successfully reintroduces the transgressive impact of incest to a modern audience lulled by Wagner's music. ...

Bonn. Finstere Mächte dominieren den ersten Akt von Johann Kresniks Ring -Projekt, für das Gottfried Helnwein Bühne und Kostüme konzipiert hat.
In Hamburg schockten Helnwein und Kresnik mit Bildern des gemeuchelten Pasolini. Stuttgart verstörte das Duo mit der aus dem Lot geratenen Bühne für Peter Weiss` "Verfolgung und Ermordung des Jean Paul Marat..." und wiederum einem heftigen Plakat: Lafontaines Kopf in der Blutlache, Titel: "Das Attentat".
Wenn jetzt Kresnik und Helnwein in Bonn Richard Wagners "Ring des Nibelungen" in Tanz- und Bildtheater umsetzen, steht erneut ein Helnwein-Plakat am Anfang: Wieder ein Kopf, der im Blut liegt, diesmal ein Kind in Uniform, buchstäblich erschlagen von einer Kaskade von Euro-Münzen. Renowned Austrian-born artist, Gottfried Helnwein has committed himself and his art to reminding the world of the Holocaust. His exhibit, Ninth November Night, consists of 17 children's portraits displayed in commemoration of Kristallnacht. Ninth November Night was originally displayed in 1988 in Cologne, Germany. Days into the exhibit, the paintings were vandalized by neo-Nazis.
This exhibit will have its American premiere in Philadelphia in Spring, 2007; now, therefore be it RESOLVED, by the Council of the City of Philadelphia that the 68th anniversary of Kristallnacht be commemorated, and that Gottfried Helnwein be honored for his artistic contributions. ...

Gottfried Helnwein's Epiphany (Adoration of the Magi) is a strange takeoff on a traditional New Testament theme in art. The work depicts a Madonnalike mother displaying her baby to attentive Nazi officers, Painted in hyperrealist grisaille with chiaroscuro effects, the work resembles an old documentary photograph made huge. The eerie, sinister overtones are unmistakable. Who is this mother? What do these officers want with her and her child? What kind of official paper might the officer on the left hold in his hand and what might be its result? This month FanMail client NOCTALUCA released their album "Towering the Sum" to a frenzy of anticipation and critical acclaim.
In a recent newsletter to their fans, Noctaluca introduced GOTTFRIED HELNWEIN and exlained how the artist inspired the album. The really cool thing about the newsletter is that it was almost entirely about something other than themselves. No cheesy self portraits or "here are our tour dates" or "thanks to the people who love us". The entire newsletter was focused on the artist that had influenced them.

Erste museale Werkschau des österreichischen Künstlers, der seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre zunächst in Deutschland gelebt hat und heute in Los Angeles und Irland ansässig ist. Die Ausstellung im grossen Saal des Museums zeigt Werke aus allen Schaffensperioden seit den frühen 1970er Jahren. Dabei steht das Thema des menschlichen Gesichts im Mittelpunkt, mit dem Helnwein sich in mehr als drei Jahrzehnten künstlerischer Arbeit auseinander gesetzt hat.In Österreich ist Helnwein nach wie vor als "Provokateur" und "Schockkünstler" im Bewusstsein. Der Name Helnwein stand damals für hyperrealistische Darstellungen verletzter und verunstalteter Menschen, oft Kinder, sowie für Bildzitate aus der Populärkultur.
Angesichts der substanziellen Weiterentwicklung seines Werks, verbunden mit neuen Bildfindungen und dem Einsatz neuer Medien (digitale Fotografie, Video) gilt es, dieses Oevre heute umfassend zu betrachten. Dies erscheint nicht zuletzt auch im Kontext eines Booms neuer figurativer Malerei und angesichts des weitgehend durchgesetzten Bezugs auf Medienbilder sowie auf Populärkultur in der jungen Malerei interessant. Mit einem aktualisierten Blick auf Helnweins Bildsujets und seine Produktionsweise ist ein Künstler zu entdecken, der sich in erster Linie moralischen, emanzipatorischen Motiven verpflichtet fühlt und dessen Platz innerhalb der sogenannten "politischen" Kunst in vollem Umfang erst anzuerkennen ist. ...

Konsequent und virtuos. Technische Meisterschaft und auch die Konsequenz einer packenden sozialkritischen Thematik offenbaren sich in dieser Ausstellung: Gewalt, Schmerz, Verletzung werden dargestellt. Den Körper ebenso wie die Psyche betreffend. Helnwein dokumentiert hier in Linz einen künstlerischen Reifegrad, der eine weitere Steigerung kaum vorstellbar macht. Seine Eingriffe sind von einer schmerzhaften Unmittelbarkeit, deren emotionale Energie weit über die großen Bildformate hinaus den Raum und sein Publikum ergreift. It is the function of the artist to evoke the experience of surprised recognition: to show the viewer what he knows but does not know that he knows.
