Gottfried Helnwein, der Maler aus Wien, und Marilyn Manson, der Schockrocker aus Canton/Ohio, verbindet seit etwa einem Jahr eine künstlerische Freundschaft. Wie ausgerechnet der Schockrocker auf den Maler Helnwein gekommen ist? Als Kind hat sich Manson Blackout, eine Platte der Scorpions, gekauft, und war so begeistert vom Cover, dass er ab da die Karriere Helnweins verfolgt hat. So verwundert es auch nicht, dass Helnwein auf die Frage "Welche Maler und bildenden Künstler haben dich am meisten beeinflusst?" folgendermen antwortet: "Egon Schiele, Gottfried Helnwein, Luis Buel, Da Da, [Hieronymus] Bosch, Warhol, Mark Ryden, Fellini. Und so weiter..."
Für das Cover von Mansons neuer CD "The Golden Age of Grotesque" lichtete Helnwein Manson als eine Art Mickey Mouse ab. Doch das war der amerikanischen Plattenfirma dann doch zu "heiss" - schade eigentlich, aber über die Mouse macht man sich echt nicht lustich - nie nich! ...

Ein Künstler, der nicht provoziert, wird unsichtbar. Kunst die keine starken Reaktionen auslöst, hat keinen Wert. Helnwein hat das verinnerlicht und entspricht damit genau dem Kern meiner Musik. Unsere Zusammenarbeit erschöpft sich nicht darin, dass ein Künstler einem Musiker ein Cover für sein Album malt. Wir schaffen zusammen Kunst, die unseren Gemütszustand wiedergibt.
SPIEGEL:
Helnwein sagt, Sie seien ähnlich einsam wie er.
Manson:
Ganz bestimmt. Es ist übrigens nicht nur schön, sondern auch befremdlich, jemanden zu finden, der tatsächlich das Gleiche liebt wie man selbst. Ich bin gewohnt für meine Ideen verurteilt zu werden - und plötzlich ist da jemand, der mich auf Anhieb versteht. Ich war nie ein geselliger Mensch. Hinzu kam die Zusammenarbeit mit dem österreichischen Künstler Gottfried Helnwein. Der Maler und Fotograf hatte bereits 1982 in der Musikszene von sich reden gemacht, als er das Cover legendäre Cover für das Scorpions-Album "Blackout" lieferte. Ebenso bekannt wurde seine Rammstein-Foto-Session und das Cover für das aktuelle Westernhagen-Album. Für "The Golden Age Of Grotesque" schuf er das Artwork, darunter auch sinistre Porträtaufnahmen Mansons mit Mickey Mouse-Ohren.
Helnwein sagte einst, er habe von Walt Disney mehr gelernt, als von Leonardo da Vinci, die Bilder sind aber wohl eher eine Verarbeitung des neuen Selbstverständnisses von Manson: "Früher war ein Entertainer für mich etwas völlig anderes als ein Künstler. An diesem Punkt meines Lebens meine ich aber beides zu sein. Leute zu unterhalten ist Teil meiner Kunst und meines Lebensstils." ...

What were the reactions to the work you created together? Some of the photos are a bit unsettling....
MANSON:
It was funny; we released some of the photos without commenting what they were or what we intended to do with them – if they were the cover for The Golden Age of Grotesque or not. Not even our record company knew what they were for. They assumed they were for the cover artwork and got quite angry, "What the fuck should we do with this cover?!?" So I told them not to worry about it; it's not the cover and showed them the one with the Mickey Mouse ears. It freaked them out even more. But that's how I deal with people who think they're the portraits of authority. ...
