The creator of the alluring image is Production Designer Gottfried Helnwein, who transfers the power and pull of his photographic work (check out www.helnwein.com to get a taste of some of the heaviest, most uncompromising visuals you will see in several lifetimes) to the sets and costumes of Der Rosenkavalier.
Helnwein's poster concept cuts through the traditional coyness and goes straight for the nugget of truth that no doubt had Lesbian and Gay audiences nudging and winking for the past century. Eins zeigt ein Mädchen mit frechem Gesicht und Blindenband um den Arm, das die Zunge herausstreckt. Erst habe ich gelächelt. Wer den Blick länger verharren lässt, sieht, dass dem Mädchen Blut zwischen den Beinen herunterläuft. Es wurde ganz offensichtlich missbraucht, ihm wurde Gewalt angetan.... Ja, Kinder sind verletzbar. Kindheit kann grausam sein, wenn Kinder ausgeliefert sind. Ich denke an sexuellen Missbrauch, eine unglaublich Form von Folter an Menschen, die lebenslang an dem Trauma leiden werden. Ich denke an Kindersoldaten in Togo, im Kongo, im Sudan. Zerstörte Leben, brutal geopfert für idiotische Machtkämpfe, in denen Zerstörung das oberste Gebot ist, in denen es keine Ziele mehr gibt. Ich denke an Kinder in Indien, die schuften schon mit fünf Jahren um ein paar Münzen zu verdienen, damit ihre Familie überleben kann. Ich denke an die 12-jährigen Judith Wischnajatskaja, die im Juli 1942 in ihrem letzten Brief schrieb: “Lieber Vater! Vor dem Tod nehme ich Abschied von Dir. Wir möchten so gerne leben, doch man lässt uns nicht, wir werden umkommen. Ich habe solche Angst vor diesem Tod, denn die kleinen Kinder werden lebendig in die Grube geworfen.“ ...

Generell würde sich das Kunstmuseum gut entwickeln. Kritik an ihrer Person weist Rollig zurück: "Es ist bei allen großen Museen so, dass in der Eröffnungsphase die Massen kommen und nach einer gewissen Zeit ein Knick im Besucherstrom erfolgt."
Der Weg aus der Krise soll 2006 vor allem über eine internationale Architekturausstellung und über Gottfried Helnwein führen, der im Lentos 20 Jahre nach seiner Auswanderung erstmals wieder eine Einzelausstellung präsentieren wird. ...

Helnwein has accepted commissions from Jewish supremacist groups and produced works which denigrate WWII Germany in the conventional and expected way (though Helnwein's representational and emotional vision has an impact far beyond that of most modern artists), but he has also produced works which are more enigmatic, and seem to embody a Jungian, archetypal, and near-religious conception of that period -- though it is certainly likely that Helnwein is merely "helping" Whites, especially Germans, deal with what he might conceive as "demons within." ...

The highlight of the trip for me was going to Gottfried Helnwein's studio- Kevin has been drawing Gottfried's daughter, Mercedes Helnwein (her art is great, as well)- and she invited us to her dad's studio event. Mr. Helnwein had just designed the set and costumes for a big opera in Los Angeles, and the Opera put on this event at his studio- it was pretty crazy. The artist's wet dream- THE studio visit, for sure. We walked into the space- there were opera singers performing, pretty rich people abound and Helwein's enormous paintings EVERYWHERE!!! ...

Her husband built her an entire life-sized fantasy farmhouse and mill with sheep, shepherds and all - and an idealistic landscape shaped around it. Dressed in theatrical shepherdess attire, she could now play "innocent country folk" with her girlfriends. ...

In Richard Strauss' opera, aging aristocrat Marschallin beds the young Octavian. But Octavian's a mezzo-soprano, played by a lady in what opera calls a "trouser role." Helnwein just took the trousers out. In the ad, the women's expressions are tender and their lips mere millimeters apart.
Helnwein isn't surprised by the scuttlebutt in the normally staid opera world.
"I'm used to it," Helnwein said. "It always happens with my work. I don't intend it really, but it happens. I think it has to do with the fact that middle class people usually don't want anything to change. If it could, everything would freeze and stay the same way forever. But artists are very annoying, disturbing guys. They always want to change and mess something up. ...

...There is of course the delicious irony in the third act when we have a female playing a male turns around and portrays a female! Even more ironic, the love interests in the opera could hardly be more heterosexual. Besides the fact that the Marschallin and Ochs are cousins, they also enjoy a passion for much younger members of the opposite sex!
I believe this almost fairy tale opera—a Viennese masquerade if you will—has been besmirched by this ad’s misleading dissemblance. The ad credits Gottfried Helnwein for artwork. I see he is also listed as a production manager. I hope you will show him a copy of this letter.
I will see Der Rosenkavalier—my favorite opera—next month, but I will approach it with trepidation. In Gottes Namen, what have you done to this beloved opera? ...
