i've been interested in SRL ever since reading about them in a William T. Vollman novel some 7 years ago. I saw Mark Pauline (SRL founder) give a lecture in a little coffee shop 3 years ago and did a drawing of his mangled hand- destroyed by robots no doubt.
I'd seen them on video, but this was the first time I got to experience their work first hand. Someone had leaned a ladder up onto a roof so I climbed up there and found a good view. There were pretty big crowds down below. After the show I threw a few fliers over the edge and watched them spin to the ground. Some guy actually caught one out of the air and then spent the next 5 minutes reading it. I wonder if he will become a producer...
I sold a bunch of credits to people afterward. been a while since i hit the streets in person, been so busy with all the other work and keeping up with our on-line development. was pretty fun, especially with such a colorful crowd. there was a guy carrying a real pigs head and another dude in a rabbit costume, and all this mangled scorched metal.
i got interviewed by Kill Radio spontaneously. they also bought a credit. and I sold a credit to a guy named Gregory Schaeffer who I actually went to high school with back in Satellite Beach, Florida. Greg and I actually both spoke at our high school graduation. its funny that we should both end up out in LA, and are now working on a film together...

Then yesterday I went to the studio of Gottfried Helnwein, an amazing Austrian artist who is currently designing a piece for the LA Opera. Gottfried's studio was filled with enormous paintings of ancient fetuses and portraits of Marilyn Manson. I showed him some of my short films and then pitched him The 1 Second Film.It was hard to get a sense of his reaction, he was supportive of the idea but isn't really the kind of man you can get an easy read of. But he did come on board as a $5 Associate Producer, which is his first producing credit. I also invited him to consider directing a frame of THE 2nd SECOND FILM, either in New York or Afghanistan. He is the first person I have offered a frame of the sequel to direct. But being a very hands on artist, the idea of thousands of people working on his painting was definately foreign to him and something he wanted to think about a little longer. I also asked Gottfried what moment he would choose if he had to reduce his life to one perfect moment that only lasted a second, and make a film out of it. Gottfried replied, "A moment of absolute horror." I think that was his sense of humor. We all laughed a bit, but I couldn't help but wonder what that moment would depict.

Then I sold a credit to Michael 'Kahuna' who was delivering giant hissing cockroaches to Gottfried's studio. Michael owns a reptile and fish store. He was really nice and came on board as a $6 Associate. We talked for a while and he invited me to Green tea some day. He also offered to donate something 'exotic' to our fundraiser auction. Michael really liked the idea of The 1 Second Film. He said it made his day. And I was really glad to meet such a nice guy.
